This painting is part of a 2025 series inspired by my Portuguese heritage and the intricate beauty of azulejos (glazed tiles). The background features a traditional tile pattern, while the borders show blank silhouettes, traces left by the two figures who have stepped forward into the composition. These statuesque forms recall the stylised figures often seen along the edges of historic tile panels, depicted in tones characteristic of Portuguese ceramics. As they break free from the border’s constraints, the figures transform, now painted in warm, natural tones and vibrant yellow garments. They embody movement and freedom, symbolising a departure from the stillness and limitations historically imposed on women. The contrast between decorative form and expressive realism creates a visual dialogue between tradition and modernity, structure and liberation.
