This painting continues a body of work in which I depict figures in profile, drawing inspiration from Piero della Francesca’s iconic portraits. This piece specifically references his diptych 'The Duke and Duchess of Urbino', featuring Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza.
As in the original, my watercolour presents two figures facing one another. In my version, however, both figures are women, reflecting a contemporary context. Their skin is rendered in warm, natural tones, their garments in rich oranges. The abstract background echoes the palette of della Francesca’s sky and landscape, grounding the work in art historical dialogue.
While I have followed the proportions of the 15th-century composition, I chose to bring the figures physically closer. This small but deliberate shift reflects a modern reinterpretation, suggesting a more equal, intimate connection between the two subjects.
