Face to Face Series
This ongoing series is inspired by Portuguese tiles (azulejos) and the profile portraits of 14th-century masters like Piero della Francesca.
Each watercolour features two mirrored depictions of the same face: one rendered in the stylised, patterned tradition of azulejos, the other in warm, lifelike tones. The compositions explore bold colour, symmetry, and the interplay between tradition and realism.
Panel Series
Series of works developed in 2025 that draws on my Portuguese heritage, taking inspiration from the intricate beauty of azulejos.
The works feature figures set against Portuguese tile panel backgrounds, exploring two different approaches to representation. In one, figures are depicted in realistic detail, while their garments and accessories are left as white silhouettes. This use of negative space creates striking visual contrast and draws attention to the body and posture. In the other, a statuesque figure remains within the tile border, echoing the stylised forms found in traditional designs, contrasted with a vibrant yellow figure breaking free from these constraints, painted with fluid, expressive lines.
Together, these works reflect a dialogue between tradition and modernity, using form, colour and space to symbolise movement, defiance and the breaking of barriers, a visual metaphor for women’s empowerment.
Poses Series
Series inspired by fashion photography, developed between 2023 and 2024, exploring the relationship between figure and clothing. On the left, the model’s body is depicted in a realistic manner using warm tones while the clothing remains as a delicate outline. On the right, the clothing is emphasised in full colour and detail, while the figure is reduced to a faint silhouette. Through this duality, the work shifts attention from garment to individual, challenging the anonymity of models in commercial imagery. The composition highlights my use of bold colour, negative space, and contrast to create visual balance.
Diptych Series
This ongoing series explores identity and presence in fashion imagery, drawing inspiration from the visual language of azulejos. The two-square composition mirrors the tiled format while introducing a layered narrative.
The upper panel isolates half of the model’s face, rendered in warm tones to emphasise self-assurance and boldness. The lower panel shifts focus to the garment, using vivid colours to draw attention away from the individual. Cropped and recontextualised from a full-body image on a clothing website, these works reframe the subject, highlighting the person rather than the clothing. Through bold colour and fragmentation, the pieces challenge how we look and what we choose to notice.
